Doom-ish

this game is lotta fun. Feels a lot like VR Doom- the music could’ve almost been taken from Doom 2016! I’ve seen a lot of reviews on here where they say this is the best grappling hook and swinging game - I don’t think it’s actually the best… I think swarm is better for that… But it is really good! Love the updates with the ability to tear your enemies apart with your bare hands! Also, very cool how you can build yourself buffs in a lab! Here’s a tip if you think you’re doing it wrong… The empty glass vials will respawn- only use one per ingredient otherwise it won’t work… It took me a while to figure that out. Can’t wait to see what else they add to this game… The updates have been fairly regular and a high-quality.

I want to love this game

The art style, soundtrack, and doom eternal inspired gore is enough to get me intrigued, however I find that the actual gameplay elements are clunky and don’t really mix well. Let’s start with the “hook” part of “dead hook.” The swinging doesn’t really have any physics it seems like and you’re more or less shooting out chains that don’t really work as hooks. You pull slightly in one direction and get sent in a random direction at Mach 4 speeds. This would be fine normally (considering how difficult it is to make a vr game with fluid swinging) but the areas are way too small for how quickly you accelerate. I think the best way to maybe try and help the swinging out is to make it more physics based and tweak the acceleration to slow it down, so it’s not as nauseating and flat as it is right now. The shooting is fine… nothing too special but it’s the gore that makes it fun, and the vibrations and chunky reloads make the guns have heft and power behind each shot. But, like I said before, if they just slowed the game down a little bit, the shooting would feel more natural and would flow better with the movement. I’d also like to take a second to mention the amount of bugs in the game (not the enemies, the actual issues) and I’m sure they’ll be ironed out eventually but the game just feels more like a beta with some game breaking bugs and soon gameplay issues. The silver lining is that the devs have been able to fix games in the past and fine tune the experience post launch, so; before you disregard this review and say that I’m just hating on the game, I’d like to say that I’m keeping this in my library and I’ll be praying that it gets the love that it needs to really exceed. I think I can sum up my experience in a few words; good idea, rough execution. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
