FOUR SINGAPORE PLACES

• HAJI LANE: the pastel shophouse lane in Kampong Glam on a hot afternoon. Murals on every free metre, strings of lights across the lane, cafe tables, Peranakan tiles, and the mosque's golden dome glowing at the end of the street.
• SOMERSET: the skate park off Orchard Road at night. The legal wall under the floodlights, a quarter pipe and a funbox, giant LED screens on the malls and fairy lights in the rain trees as the double-deckers roll by.
• MARINA BAY: a works hoarding on the bayfront promenade at blue hour, the whole skyline lighting up across the water: the three-tower hotel with the ship on its roof, the lotus museum, the observation wheel turning, the glowing supertrees and bumboats on the bay.
• RAIL CORRIDOR: the old railway trail through the rainforest on a soft misty morning, with a red-brick signal hut, mossy concrete and the black steel truss bridge.

THE CITY IS ALIVE People sit at the cafes, skate, jog the promenade and stop to look at your work. Buses, cars, boats and the turning wheel keep Singapore moving around you.
