A confusing mess

I hope I can say this kind of stuff without it being insulting. I'm glad every time someone tries their hand at a VR game, but here we go. The textures are pastel, flat and shadowless. There's no depth of distance, so you can collide with the ground and never know you were close to it. Flight is slow and interacting with the aircraft is a chore. Every time you get into the vehicle you'll be facing a different direction, your plane will be stuck in the ground, and despite it teleporting both it and you to what should be the ideal place in the cockpit, pulling back on the throttle will cause your body to clip into the seat behind you. The character designs seem bafoonish and low effort, with 3 second animations that repeat endlessly, all the while speaking in harmonics. It feels like really basic stuff, and calling it open world seems disingenuous as well. It's a small world that's initially limited by the incoming cloud, and though you can technically go anywhere within it, the boundaries are obvious and the incentives to follow a linear direction are clear when there are boosts guiding you. I don't know why this game looks so simple, with physics that only occasionally kick in, with textures and shadows that are non-existent, when so many games even going back to the Quest 1 did so much more and with so much less. It's not a good game.

Chill vibes

I adore this game. Its so relaxing. The world is beautiful, the flying controls are perfect, the grappling and puzzles are fun. Its just a totally de-stressing experience. Im so glad I picked this up easily worth the full asking price. If I had one complaint, it would be that its not available for the quest 2. I have a 3 (so glad i didnt get a 3s, the fov and extra resolution goes a long way on a game like this) but I feel like this game should be available for more people to experience and although the game is beautiful im not exactly seeing visuals that wouldnt run on a 2. Im not a programer so maybe the large maps need the extra gpu and ram? Either way, everyone needs to give this game a try. Especially if u want to play something to calm you down.

Dated graphics and poor performance

Note: After I left my initial review I requested a refund. Afterwards I found that I'd accidentally played it in low power mode. Because some of my complaints were regarding issues like resolution to be fair to the developers I repurchased the game to test it again in full power mode. (I realize I can't request a refund twice for one game but fair's fair.) Unfortunately running in full power doesn't help, (and it possibly makes the performance worse), so I'm stuck with this. The graphics looked simple, but charming in the promotional videos, however in the headset they look extremely dated. The models are basic, there are no dynamic shadows, and the textures look a bit muddy. I'm guessing the trailer is from the PCVR version. It's a Quest 3 exclusive yet the resolution isn't particularly sharp either. It doesn't feel like being in a vibrant cartoon world, it feels like looking at a cartoony flat screen game from decades ago. And despite the Quest 1 era graphics the game doesn't even run smoothly which is astonishing. The frame rate drops when turning your ship which not only looks bad, it makes me queasy. The performance is so poor I can't play it for more than 15 minutes or so without taking a break. I've been playing VR for almost a decade and can take almost anything without feeling ill. Anything except vehicle sims with serious frame rate drops in the turns. I think it actually played better in low power mode since that caps the frame rate and should make the frame rate more consistent. If the developers can't figure out how to optimize their code I'll try playing through it in low power mode. The grappling mechanics feel as basic as the graphics. You're just pulling your viewpoint along and there's no sense of physics. The description says you "swing" but unless some mode unlocks that adds physics, you don't swing, you just drag yourself along. The vehicle gets around well enough, but again it doesn't seem to have any mass or momentum. The "physics" are inconsistent. When grappling you float in the air yet while standing still in your ship you very slowly sink if you let go of the controls. This is very annoying during the character interactions since if you don't grip the controls, by the end of the conversation you'll be below the character talking to you. Oddly enough their ships don't sink. The game claims to support standing play yet it glitches if you turn with your feet. Every time you get back to your ship you're facing a random direction, usually backwards or sideways. Games like Walkabout Mini Golf got standing support right years ago. The Quest is a wireless headset, developers should test their games with natural turning if they claim to support standing or room scale. The gameplay tasks are extremely simple but I assume the gameplay gets more complex and interesting as the game progresses. Since I'm stuck with this I'm at the mercy of the developers to fix the performance issues and hopefully make it look like a Quest 3 game. If the game gets substantial improvements I'll revisit this review but as of now I can't recommend this game to anyone.

Chill exploration adventure!

It's like nothing I have played before. It took me awhile to figure out exactly what I was supposed to be doing but if you stick with it, explore and talk to all the NPCs you will start to understand how things work. Mechanics work well although it has a slight learning curve. Graphics are nice yet simple. Music fits the game well. All and all it's a great game especially for what the asking price is. Definitely recommend!

A game with genuine soul — highly recomm

Compass is a gorgeous exploration game where getting lost isn't a bug, it's the whole point. Half the time you have no idea where you're going, and somehow that's completely charming. As you explore, you'll stumble across ruins filled with puzzles that get progressively more interesting the deeper you go. The world looks fantastic, the ally designs are unique and memorable, and the soundtrack immediately stood out — seriously, the music is incredible. There are some hazards to watch out for — mines and lasers that can literally blow up your ship — which keeps things tense without feeling unfair. My only real complaint is that the ship feels a little slow at the start, though upgrades later on do help with that. Overall, Compass is one of those rare games that feels like it has a real identity. If you're someone who looks for games with "soul," this is absolutely one of them. 10/10 — this one gets my seal of approval.
