Serious tool for training tennis

I'm probably in a small minority of people who use VR tennis exclusively to improve my real life tennis skills. I've owned this game for many years. The physics have been steadily improving, and with version 5.1 I can finally say it's good enough for serious training. I take a weekly lesson with a real coach, and this app allows me to realistically recreate many of the same drills with the ball machine. Hitting with the bot in rally mode also feels very close to the real thing. I switch back and forth between real and VR tennis and I no longer feel a jarring transition. It is more like playing with a different racket and a different person, but still the same game. I highly recommend this app for tennis training, but if you are serious about it's crucial to have two things: a racket attachment that makes the weight and balance similar to your real racket, and a space large enough to move without any form of artificial locomotion.

Not really a simulator...

EDIT: RESPONSE. After posting this review, the developer banned me from the Discord server. This proves that he is not interested in feedback, only in silencing criticism. The developer has admitted that the game does not track ball impact location. He stated: "It’s as if you always hit the ball in the center of the strings." You cannot claim "top players" are using "real technique" when the game artificially corrects every shot to be a perfect sweet-spot hit. Pushing the stick forward triggers a momentum boost that results in unrealistic 100kmph defensive slices—something the dev admitted is possible in discord. As for the real-life coaches, he is talking about himself as he claims: "I'm a tennis coach and I studied physics of tennis so i know what happens." -------------- At first I thought the game, because we are talking about a game and not about a simulator as the developer wants to advertise it as, is good for practicing your shots using the single player practice ball machine. You are inside a court instead of grabbing your racket at home and start shadow swinging. If you start playing multiplayer you will realize that the physics in this game are all over the place. The shot speeds are insane, hitting 110 kmph forehands and backhands with no effort and serves you haven't hit before so fast in your life. The most bugged thing in this game though is the joystick movement. "High" rank players in the game are exploiting it, hitting shots using 0 technique. You can hit unrealistic angles and speeds just by moving forward with the joystick and hitting continental forehands without worrying about putting topspin on the ball. If you try to compete with them you will only ruin your real life tennis technique. Definitely not worth 22€ for a game, again we are talking about a game and not a tennis simulator, where there is only one developer behind it, who doesn't want to take in consideration the community feedback and thinks he is always right about everything.

No longer my Fave

This is hands down the best tennis simulation in VR at the moment. Is it perfect? No, but what is! I love multiplayer, and most of the time I have no problem finding someone to play with. It honestly feels like you’re playing real tennis UPDATE: 12/11/23 FPT used to be my go to tennis jam but things have changed soooo much since my original review almost a year ago. I feel like the physics keep getting worse with each update, and worse, each time I start getting used to the new mechanics, boom, a new update switching everything up again. It’s weird because I feel like the physics were perfect, or dang near perfect 8 months ago, and now it feels terrible. Too much tinkering isn’t always a good thing. I’m sad to say I’ve deleted this from library and now exclusively play TENNIS ESPORTS when I need to scratch that sim itch. FPT isn’t a 1 star game by any means, but it also ain’t anywhere close to 5. It’s now simply mediocre. RESPONSE TO DEVELOPER: Appreciate the quick response, but I never said it was the previous update… there’s been at least 3-4 physics updates in the last 8 months though. Update #2 response to developer 3/6/24 This developer has a serious issue with critiques and complaints. I read thru all the reviews and all the 1-4 star reviews have 1 common denominator: the developer ALWAYS dismisses the players concerns. It’s either a headsets problem or internet speed, or your controllers, your settings, or you’re just plain bad. It’s NEVER the devs fault. Not once in any of the reviews have I seen the dev say: “wow, great idea! We’ll see what we can do about adding that!” Or “I’m really sorry your having difficulties. Please contact me at blank and we’ll iron out your issues” Or “I agree with the criticism, but hardware specs don’t allow for us to implement such an idea”…. None of those type of comments. Also don’t appreciate the dev attempting to shame you into increasing your score if he doesn’t like it, which is any score below 5 stars. “TENNIS ESPORTS”. That’s where it’s at right now. Much better dev, physics, and overall enjoyment. Never returning to this game

Ridiculous Sweetspot, no real simulator

FPT is not a real tennis simulator but a false title to sell! It has ATP speed. You may quickly feel like Sinner under clostebol, but not learn real tennis. Why? Because ball rebound on the racket reaches from below the grip to the head. The VR racket head detection is about 75x35cm, too wide compared to the real 32x25cm. My YT video proof that the ball can be hit below the hand under the displayed grip has been taken down by a copyright strike by Michele Laurello aka Mikori. You can hit the ball off-center with the frame, it still feels perfectly centered. When the ball can be hit hard with no care of when and how it touches the racket head, no eyes on the ball, it goes over the net more likely in arcade than simulation mode. YT tournament videos show that games become long 10-30 repeated baseline rallies. It is not even fitness, as autorun will get you there, if not, joystick helps. Some racket adapters allow each stroke to fly effortless at 120. Even ATP players can't play this way. Use trial & error to adjust to strange physics. Volley's are never decisive, awkward racket pull backs score at the net. Hard to reach baseline shots can be returned with a snap of the wrist. Adapt to a VR world with little resemblance to real tennis. Friends get banned mentioning Tennis Esports, Court time tennis that require much focus because of a correct head sweet spot, very unforgiving, forcing the eye on the ball, which helps on a real court. When I try FPT again, wrong physics are so obvious in simulation mode. I can adapt but it's not tennis practice. It is harmful to my RL level. Good online games are rare, seldom decent simulation players online. A closed community organizes plays among their own and share prize winnings. The same tournament winners can be seen on YT. If a challenger rises, like I did or another lately, he is targeted on a discord channel with no rules. I even get threatened here for my honest review, 1 of 12%, so read my reviews for e-sport and CTT.

Inconsistent gameplay experience

I do feel like the developers keep messing with the formula for the physics in this game, and it just leads to a lot of inconsistency overall. It’s like every time you boot up the game after an update, it plays worse than it did before. I just wish they could settle on the physics and let us play. Right now, it just feels like everything is off.
