Absolute cinema🚬🗿

First of all, I want to clarify that I’m a player who has completed the game 100%, and I haven’t been paid to give it a good rating. Secondly, if by any chance you’re reading my comment, please don’t pay attention to the negative reviews — they’re from people with two brain cells that aren’t even enough to add 1+1. These are people who rate the game poorly because they discover at the end that you can hide, who don’t know you can distract enemies by throwing objects, or who give it one star just because they can’t skip the dialogues. The game is incredible. It immerses you in a dark atmosphere, has immersive sound, and a story full of twists and amazing moments. You have to be patient, uncover the story little by little, and start connecting the dots. The game leaves you defenseless in an Amnesia-style way, and your character is deliberately slow so you feel the horror in your own skin. It’s true that the graphics aren’t five-star quality, but it really doesn’t need them. Give it a chance — it’s a fantastic game that’s been unfairly criticized.

Garden wraith ruins the game early on

Despite some minor flaws, I was enjoying the game until about 1/3 of the through when I made it to the wraith in the garden. That level has effectively killed all my enjoyment and interest in this game. Basically, you’re forced to spend 15-20 minutes hiding from a wraith by moving behind various walls while navigating through a garden. Until it sees you, the wraith moves and turns INCREDIBLY SLOWLY so every attempt on this level seems to take forever. Once the wraith sees you, you're immediately killed and have to start the level over. Now you would think, considering you are at such a huge disadvantage in this level, that the wraith would take a couple seconds to see you: nope, the wraith can spot you instantly (and often does). Even after all that, if you manage to successfully make it through the garden the wraith will blast open all the doors to the (cabana?) room you just escaped into and then kills you anyway. There is no way to fight back or to hide again once you’ve been seen. I cannot express how much I HATE when game developers do this. These prolonged “move slowly or be killed instantly” levels were bad enough in games for console systems, but they are so much worse in VR. Does anyone out there think it sounds fun to tightly strap a VR headset to your face and then spend an hour or more playing through a single level that would take 2 minutes if not for the ridiculous handicaps the developers threw in against you? I certainly didn't. If the developers ever decide to release an update for this level, I will absolutely be willing to try again. The game was pretty good up to this point, but not good enough to justify this much frustration this early on.

Amazing

Finally, an exceptional World of Darkness game. For those who may be unaware, Wraith: The Oblivion started as a table-top R.P.G. It is part of a larger lore universe, which includes Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse. These games are known collectively as the World of Darkness. The table-top games are very fun, but any type of video game based on them is extremely rare. And a good video game based on them is even more rare, so it is refreshing to see Wraith brought into a digital format in such a serious and fun way. I am about an hour into the game and although I do have very minor complaints, these are not game breaking or hard to overcome. First the pros- a solid story that is actually scary, atmosphere, music and sound design, gameplay... kinda, let me explain. As far as gameplay goes, the sprint feature could be much faster and your Wraith powers and items could use a little bit better of an explanation of how to use them. However, neither of these things takes much time to figure out trial and error wise and in no time you will figure out how each power and item works. The only other gameplay issue I have is that the mystery is not too hard to unravel, clues are easy to find and a clever person could probably piece together what happened at Barclay Mansion, as I think I already have, but we shall see if I am right when I finish the game. Now for the cons- there isn't much, except for what I mentioned earlier such as the sprint feature and the easy to find clues, therefore not a huge challenge. The only other con to the game is a personal rather nitpicky one for me, in that certain lore mechanics from the table-top game are present in the V.R., but not well explained. This can possibly confuse players who are not aware of the table-top R.P.G. or its obscure terminology. For example early in the game you pick up a photograph which tells you that it replenishes your "Corpus", which is basically a term for a Wraiths health meter and it's never explained. Therefore, if a player doesn't know what that means, then they won't know how to replenish their health when they take damage. Also items and abilities sometimes run off a unique Wraith energy called "Pathos", and again this isn't explained well at all. Also, another ghost like entity known as your "Shadow" follows you throughout the game, but so far he hasn't been reffered to as your "Shadow", nor is it explained why he exists or what he does. The "Shadow", or a Wraith's dark half, is the definitive gameplay mechanic of the Wraith: The Oblivion table-top R.P.G. and if new players of the V.R. game don't know this then the "Shadow" that follows you in this game could be very confusing. However, I have still given this game five stars because, none of the issues I have are major ones. And most of the gameplay mechanic issues can be overcome with a little patience and some trial and error. The lore issues I have however could have been implemented a bit better, but still can be figured out and if you get lost try a friend who knows Wraith or Google. The issues I have about the "Shadow" I am confident will more than likely be explained later in the game. All in all, this game is a scary, much needed, and long overdue entry into the World of Darkness.

Oblivion is a 5 year old hidden gem!

IIf you’re reading this just buy it! Right now it’s 99 cents. And it will be the best 99 cents you have ever spent! If you miss the sale it’s still worth it! The game itself starts you off not knowing what you are doing but unlike the other reviewers complaint of this, that’s the whole point of the game. It’s telling you a story as you progress. This isn’t a game to pick up and run through, you have to dive into the story and let it guide you. The game goes from simple to creepy to morbid to terror and an anxiety level of horror that you’ll say nope and throw your headset across the room! Simply embrace the story and the horror and you’re going to have a good time! Trust me, this is a game you WANT to play through not knowing anything! update: Now that I have played through the game. Heres some tips that does not spoil the surprises! Do not look up the walkthroughs! Let it be a surprise! The game is telling a story, you need to follow the objectives. The main and actually the only gotcha what appears to be a glitch but it’s not is when your asked to burn something in a fireplace. Not spoiling anything but there is an order to follow. Put item in fireplace THEN find the gas key and turn on the fireplace. If you do the opposite the game will lock you in with something you will not want to be with. A huge tip I found very useful is when traveling, close every single door you open. KEEP ALL the doors closed at all times. The “somethings” will stay on their places for the most part. IF they hear you, they will look for you! And so you know there are two endings based on the things you collect in the game. All wins the game, anything less is lose!

Very Interesting Psychological Game

This game definitely has a slow start but once you get the different relics the suspense picks up. I cannot get further than the first Spectra ( I died about 10x) but I’m determined to finish this game. The story so far is very intriguing and I can’t wait to see how the story wraps up. If you are looking for a game to shoot up the boss, this game is not for you. The graphics are at a 9/10, Storyline 10/10, Creepy factor 8/10, Puzzles 9/10 Overall game play 9.2.
