A fantastic, but short throwback.
Intro: Before I get into details about this game, I want to throw this out there. Growing up, I played Space Channel 5 on the PS2, and was hooked by its retro style and wacky rhythm gameplay. The unique characters having dance battles in outer space was right up my alley, as I absolutely adore rhythm games. Plus, Ulala steals the show when she is on screen. Overview: Space Channel 5 VR is a love letter to fans of the series. This is the first time we have seen a new entry in the franchise in many years. The gameplay is the same as before. You must perfectly copy the enemies dance moves in a Simon Says fashion. Of course, since this is VR, you will actually be using your arms instead of buttons on a controller. Timing is crucial and the game introduces a new mechanic of matching enemies poses on top of already mimicking their arm directions. Modes: The game has a few different modes to play. Story mode takes you through 4 chapters (45 minutes or so). You can also replay these on Hard difficulty. Arcade Mode has a remixed version of the first chapter in story mode, as well as the Hatsune Miku DLC (Comes bundled for free). And finally, Trial mode, which is a 10 minute long dance battle. Extra: You can visit the dressing room to change Ulala's costumes, read up on some character bios, and also visit View Mode. Final Thougts: I love this game. It has the charm of the originals and really gets you moving. Ulala and the rest of the gang looks better than ever, and the music is really catchy. My only problem is that it's so short. If you combine story, the Miku DLC, and the dance trial, the game is roughly an hour or so long. That being said, the game has a bit of replay value for score chasing and the added Hard difficulty, which I definitely loved. There is so much style and I really would love for them to add more into the future. It really feels like you're hanging out on a T.V. set with Ulala. This is a must have for any Space Channel 5 fan. It's kinda funky in a very good way. I'm sure Ulala will make a cosmic return someday. For now, Stay Tuned :)
