ALLONS-Y!

Doctor Who Fans Score - 4 Stars Non Fans - 3 Stars Paying homage to the original source and performing some wish fulfillment for fans, whilst also making the game accessible for newcomers as well Edge Of Time is a good solid game. You will be in control of a new unamed Doctor companion and storywise it is very much in keeping with what you would expect from the Doctor Who universe and plays out a bit like a feature length episode using the tardis to travel across time and space for high stakes adventuring with some twists and turns along the way. Throuought the 2-3 hour story, the gameplay will primarily consist of navigating different environments armed with just the doctors trusty sonic screwdriver, if you havent seen the show think of this as a computer hacking swiss army knife, which you will use to solve different puzzles. With this being a very narrative driven experience the navigation is very much walk from point A to Point B solve puzzle and then rinse and repeat. The puzzles themselves are pretty standard VR puzzle affair with most being observation based requiring you to look and interact with the environment around you to identify a password or specific pattern required but there are also some logic puzzles that are more taxing on the old noodle. So being a Doctor Who fan, overall I really enjoyed this and felt it was a brilliant homage to the show that had great fan service, allowing me to experience the classic "its bigger on the inside" moment with the Tardis, use the sonic "Deus Ex Machina" screwdriver and to come face to face with some iconic creatures from the series as well. But taking a step back and forgetting my personal love for Doctor Who I would say this is a well produced title that offers up some fun and engaging puzzle solving set amongst some fantastical locations with an interesting, if not convoluted, story that comes together to offer up a great excuse to get you away from the real world for a few hours.

Don't play this

I love doctor who, and was introduced to it during Matt Smith's run as the doctor, so seeing this game got me excited, only to fail to match any hype. From a game play standpoint: Story is basic, at best, but pretty boring most the time. I couldn't get into the story because it progressed in such a weird way, and there were no character interactions outside of holograms, crappy "video feed" on screens that just played looped footage repeatedly, and a very condescending literal voice in your head that gets placed there for no good reason. The freedom and range of movement is also terrible, as every area you're in is extremely tiny, and leaves you with no where to explore except what's right in front of you, which doesn't bode well for vr, which is all about immersion into the game. You can't be immersed if you can't even go anywhere. Oh, and don't get me started on the lack of clear instructions at times, or the loading screens From a doctor who standpoint: This doesn't feel like doctor who. Sure, there's the Tardis and sonic screwdriver, the weeping angels and daleks, but the story is so disconjointed that it doesn't feel like an adventure you'd see in an episode, it feels like they're just shoving in as much recognizable things as possible to call a bad game doctor who. You never get the feeling you're on an adventure with or as the doctor. Not to mention the whole "She's not a God" line, when taking about a literal God-like character that they made for the game. The first also doesn't feel like a doctor who entity, she feels like a rip-off of a celestial from marvel. A being that just kinda came into existence because the universe happened so why not? Yeah... real original concept. "She's not a god" but she created all of humanity and consciousness across the universe, and has the power to wipe it all out because yes. Yeah, definitely not a God. David Tennet faced literal Satan in one episode, so if you want to make a God just make a God and leave it at that. Conclusion: In the end, this is a poor vr port of the edge of reality game for PC, which follows the same story in more depth and with more player control, but still just failed to meet my expectations as a fan of doctor who, and as a fan of VR. This game had so much potential, but throws it all away because of a poor narrative, poor game play, and no rewarding feeling for beating the game. There were some pretty fun aspects, like seeing daleks patrolling and having to avoid being caught, but the few good parts don't nearly outweigh the bad, and I was left wishing I had just saved my money, cause I will never replay this. It wasn't enjoyable enough to warrant doing so. If you're determined to get this game, just don't expect much out of it.

Doesn’t feel like Doctor who...

This game was a decent length for the price, but as a Whovian, it was disappointing. It never felt like it was a Doctor who adventure. It was super linear, the Doctor constantly repeats her instructions, and worst of all, the Doctor doesn’t speak in 1/2 the game. It tries to introduce a character, throw on a twist (that’s been done in a similar way before), make us ‘kill’ said character, then reveal that we didnt actually kill them two minutes later. aliens are introduced and it doesn’t feel like the way a DW alien feels. There’s no learning about them, facing them, then beating them. Its just “oh look at these guys! Do this one thing... oh wow you beat them!”. The only dr who elements are the Daleks, the weeping angels, and the tardis. The dalek sections was the worst because you couldnt control your own body, the weeping angels spoke in their part. **last I checked they couldn’t speak on their own but whatever** . The ending was confusing as well. 3/5 because the game was long enough, the other two stars being Docked is for the confusing/badly done plot and how little this feels like a dr who story

It's longer than you think

I saw a couple of reviews saying how short it was. I think people are quitting early thinking it is over. After the first section, it plays the credits and then you're in the dark for 30 seconds or so. It totally seems like it's over. Then, suddenly, it's on to the next part of the adventure. I haven't finished yet, but I'm enjoying it so far! It reminds me a little bit of the Doctor Who Experience that they used to have in Cardiff.

Decent Dr Who adventure, subpar game

This short, interesting experience falls short due to game design. The good things about it are that it plays out like a typical Doctor Who adventure, and the performances by the actors were pretty solid. Additionally, the puzzles were decent. However, the time you spend with the doctor is detracted by things like: Poor lighting No sound options (music would be louder than voices) Poor resolution (on Quest2) Compared to other games poor immersion (things like only being able to make a fist with your hand, no thumbs up or pointing) Sonic screwdriver is smaller than real life (toy) counterpart. Bottomline: If you aren’t a huge doctor who fan, stay away. If you are a huge fan, I would say get this on sale and manage your expectations.
