A solid start, but needs some work

Actually wanted to go way more in-depth with this review, but character limit on the Meta store is forcing me to keep myself short. I think this game is a good start. What's already here is quite solid, but I also have some major struggles with it. I'm a seasoned player of Taiko no Tatsujin, and despite consistently clearing some 9 star Oni songs in there, I'm struggling even on the lowest difficulties in Taiko Frenzy. You wouldn't expect this with how similar the two games are. I think my main issue here is the presentation. Having four different hittable note positions represented by just two lanes confuses my brain so much. I think color-coding is not a great way to differentiate the four positions. It works in Taiko no Tatsujin, because it doesn't care between left and right hits and also uses a different layout, but here, it messes with me so hard. I think there's actually an easy fix for this problem: Just have four lanes instead, at least as an option. That way you just need to hit the drum exactly where the notes are appearing on the screen, which I think is pretty easy for the brain to work out (based on my recent experience getting into Ragnarök, where I could immediately perform decently on even the medium difficulty). Alternatively, a "beginner mode" with just a single lane and no discrimination between left and right notes could help. Presentation aside, I think this game's soundtrack isn't quite there yet. I'm generally glad it's going with a traditional Japanese style. I like this kind of music, and it makes the game quite unique and just fits its aesthetic and gameplay very well. That being said, I think it's lacking some truely memorable songs. None of the current ones have that "oomph" that I've come to appreciate so much about the Taiko no Tatsujin soundtrack. Nothing that makes me want to keep coming back yet. I'll keep observing this game. With just a little more work, it could become one of my favorite VR titles, but not quite yet.

Like the Arcade Game Come to Life!

It's like a huge version of the Arcade Game Taiko No Tatsujin come to life. It's these kinds of things that make VR so awesome. 4 stars for me means I felt it was worth the purchase and I recommend it. To make 5 stars they'd have to blow my socks off. It's not at that level. More environments and more songs would help. I wish it had a mode with actual traditional taiko songs so I could learn to actually play a real song and not just make noise lol (Community songs may make that possible).

Rhythm greatness

Thoroughly enjoying this. I've always loved rhythm games and this is a really good one. It's pretty tough but with practice I'm definitely getting better and the soundtrack is great. Makes a nice change from the usual rock or techno in most rhythm games

The execution is flawless and highly precise—you almost feel like a real taiko drum is right in front of you. The environments are beautiful and immersive, perfectly matching the intensity and flow of the music. The progression system is especially rewarding, with unlockable drum skins, new sticks, different drums, and adorable charms for your bachi that you’ll absolutely want to collect. The mix of traditional and modern music styles adds strong replayability and keeps sessions fresh. This is a true hidden gem that somehow flew under the radar for far too long. If you enjoy rhythm games or want an authentic, energetic drumming experience in VR, Taiko Frenzy is a must-discover.

Favourite game on quest

This is honestly my favourite game on vr, as the gameplay is super clean + feels realistic. Ive tried all sorts of rhythm games on quest, but this is the most “rhythmic” of the ones I’ve tried- it feels like playing the drums and a good understanding of the rhythms you’re playing comes in handy. From a Taiko no Tatsujin player, it reminds me of playing in the actual arcade, and the additional mechanics like accent notes feel like nice additions for vr. The entire atmosphere also adds to the gameplay experience in a manner that should not be understated: the sakura theme is beautiful makes grabbing sakura multipliers feel incredibly satisfying. Overall great, and the support for custom songs is appreciated and makes it possible to always have fresh gameplay, though the included OST honestly has some bangers too.
