This is Amata K.K.'s 2nd foray into using VR to develop a relationship with a fictional character. All fiction is a kind of 'virtual reality' because we can't help but put ourselves into the shoes of the heroes and experience what they are experiencing. Amata K.K.'s The Last Labyrinth took this idea that all fiction is virtual reality to its logical conclusion: if you build a relationship with a character in actual virtual reality it will feel even more real due to the palpable sense of presence. And they were right! Go watch people play The Last Labyrinth on Youtube and they go crazy trying to protect the mysterious little girl. It took an otherwise mundane puzzle game and turned it into something special. But the last Labyrinth, while a beautiful game, suffered from the lack of ability to really communicate with the virtual character. By the game's end, I still knew little about the mysterious little girl. The Tale of Onogoro fixes this problem in spades. This time you're on an adventure with a priestess named Haru that summoned you to save her and her world. She even hints that you are actually playing... yourself! (i.e. a person in VR.) Haru's quite chatty and she has a fun personality which she regularly reveals via dialogue and her actions. (Right down to holding hands.) It's no secret Amata K.K. basically took the cute anime girl trope and put it in a Japanese girl model. But other than that, they're basically shooting for 'go adventuring with the cute anime girl' and pretty much nailed it. Haru is likable so you really want to protect her. But she's also a partner and you can't succeed without her because only she can do some actions. She praises you for your progress and calls for help if she's in danger. The gameplay is fun and engaging in its own right but more fun with a 'friend' like Haru. I hope to see more games like this in VR. The 'VR virtual character' genre has a lot of untapped potential with Amata K.K. leading the way.

With all the shooters and rhythm games littering the VR landscape, I appreciate getting a solid solo adventure. I livestreamed this and my viewers really enjoyed it as well. I knocked off a point because your companion, Haru, talks a LOT, but other than that, this is well executed. The boss battles are some of the best I’ve seen in VR. The game is beautiful to look at, music is perfect, if a bit limited. VR absolutely needs more games like this.

The main character talks alot. Sometimes about her character and other times about the story. Then there's action sequences and puzzles to do. Enjoying the game so far played about 2 hours in.

Incredible combination of first person shooter and puzzle game. I love the cel-shaded art style, and the gameplay I'd absolutely addicting. The game is decently long by VR standards, took me 5 hours and 16 minutes to complete my first playthrough. There are 32 levels in total, with 20 of them being puzzle levels, 5 boss levels, and then the game ends off with a Megaman inspired boss marathon for the last 7 levels. I got this game while on sale and it is more than worth the price. The story is pretty good too but the main reason I love it is for the gameplay.

The retro-Japanese setting and the characters may look nothing like Portal, but the game has a lot of things in common: gravity-gun puzzles interwoven with storytelling, alongside a likable sidekick character. Haru, the player’s companion, is a LOT more talkative than Katia, the character in Amata’s previous game Last Labyrinth. She plays a part of the worldbuilding by telling you all about the game’s alternate-history Japan, and will also play a part in assisting the player to get through the puzzles and boss fights. The graphics, audio, and acting are all top notch. Highly recommended!
