Jaw dropping photorealistic 3d scans

Gaussian Splats are the most amazing 3d content for VR and while there are still some artifacts the way fine details and lighting looks is incredible. This is the future of VR content and I can’t wait until til we can upload our own scans or see Gaussian Splat Video.

Excellent Gaussian 3D volumetric videos! The video quality is always excellent, even if the content could sometimes be more interesting and engaging. Some videos stand out, like the two singers or the guy repairing the bike, while others, despite their great quality (for example, the girl with the large violin), are less captivating as subjects. Regarding the external static images, at the moment there is only one image of a garden, which is interesting, but many more would be needed. Currently, there are also only plates of food and a single external scenario; it would be fantastic if you could add additional external scenarios to increase variety and content usability. Additionally, it would be very useful if, once the video is loaded onto the headset, the app worked offline, so that downloaded content could be viewed without needing an internet connection. Finally, an interesting idea would be to create a paid service where users could send their own scans create with cameras of quest 3 (like in Hyperscape), which you process and make available for download, to then view offline. For such a service, I would be willing to pay for each scan.

Promising, but not there yet

This Quest app, like its SteamVR counterpart, showcases static scenes using Gaussian Splatting. While many of the scenes appear to be drawn from research papers on Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) and Gaussian Splatting (without any attribution to the original authors), the quality of the rendered scenes seems lower than what I've seen using the code from those papers. Though NeRFs and Gaussian Splatting are typically impressive in 2D, 3D, and VR, this app suffers from several issues that detract from the experience. Beyond the aforementioned low quality, there are constant flickering, rendering artifacts, and performance issues in many scenes (especially in "Construct of Play," which frequently drops frames, even on the Quest 3). Additionally, the GUI and controls are non-intuitive, spartan, and somewhat confusing. The content is also very limited. If you're looking to experience some Gaussian Splatting scenes in VR, this app is a free and simple option. However, if you want something better (at least for now), I recommend exploring the many photogrammetry apps available on the Horizon Meta Store and Steam (if you have a VR-ready PC).

Digital Magic!

So far I’ve only tried the cook and dancer holograms but my mind is already blown. Once you get a video loop running and scaled to life size the effect is surreal and dream-like. This is astonishing technology! In mixed reality with the Quest 3’s full color pass through it feels like something right out of Blade Runner. It takes me back to the moment when I first saw a demo of the Amiga 1000 back in the 1980s and my mind was flooded with possibilities. This feels like the beginning of a quantum leap.

Amazing Digital Holograms

I was making my own 3D Holograms 30 years ago with chemical film and lasers. Now the digital equivalent has arrived and it’s mind blowing. Looking forward to even more content in the future.
