Hand tracking tips +review +wishlist

I see several people having trouble with hand tracking. I too had trouble initially but it is working great for me now. For me the trick was to turn on hand tracking on the Quest in the main settings. See: https://support.oculus.com/articles/headsets-and-accessories/controllers-and-hand-tracking/hand-tracking-quest-2 In general I like the app but wish it could do more (below). It is a great cool down for my arms after a session with several of the action apps like beat saber. I like the translucent teachers, they guide without blocking the scenery. The orbs do help me position my hands in space and guide the speed of movement. It took more than the 2 hour evaluation period to get comfortable with the mechanics, but I'm glad I kept it. For 9.99, it does a great job of giving a Tai-Chi-like experience. Gentle flowing movement in a pretty environment with soothing music and nature sounds. In settings, I turned off hand orbs and lines and that helped clean up the interface for me. I don't get those annoying crayon lines tracing my hand movement all over my environment. I also turned instructor voice volume to 0. I never found her to say anything useful. My biggest pet peeve is the "Problem Detected, Do you want to calibrate your arm length?" message. I wish I could turn that off permanently. Every time I get a little off track, it pops up and totally destroys the mood of the session. I wish there were an instruction mode that would teach widely recognized Tai Chi movements, with their common names, like "ward off", "white crane spreads wings",... Then build a routine that strings those moves together. The voice over could help with foot movement, weight distribution, etc. Routines could be categorized by the amount of guardian space required. The mechanics of this app would be perfect for teaching like that. Those names would mean so much more than the named sessions that exist now. All those sessions seem largely the same.

It is “okay.”

I study Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and Wu Gong in the real world, so am a tough critic. Hand position is critical in energy work, so the controllers get in the way a bit. Also, for me hard to match the foot motion displayed with my own feet. That may get easier and if so I’ll be back to add a star. Hand tracking without the controllers would really be helpful. For just movement? It is good. Does it do anything with the body’s Qi system? I can’t tell yet. This review will be updated as I use the application more. I like the idea. And am happy to pay the developers. And I enjoy it. But, I prefer traditional routines. Ideas? Add traditional Tai Chi with a Tai Chi sword. Add traditional routines that are not so New Age. Hand tracking is supported!!! Cool! I somehow missed that (new VR user). Definitely four stars then.

Ummm Yes and no

A lot of good reviews for this app, and I know why. The method it uses for you to "trace" your movements is quite good. Very well done for a VR environment. After that, the app assumes you know all about Tai Chi. No explanations, insights, or instructions at all. No demonstrations. No little video of someone doing the moves first. No nothing. Just trace the balls. Not even a voice over instruction "raise your arms out like a balloon filling with air" ... nothing at all. Since their website is effectively nothing, it's hard to know what's up. Is this a new app, in beta or something? Do they update it a frequently? Are features missing for these reasons or is it just not for newbies? Another thing the app needs to do every time it opens, but does not: Line you up. It needs to tell you where to stand, stick out your arms, touch your head, etc etc so it can make sure it adjusts for you. As it is right now, it just starts and doesn't care. You have to dive around in settings to manually set arms lengths....If only there was some virtual way to measure that... I'll change this review once this app has features that make it more useful.

Ain't No Chi Here

Agreed with MellowDee, unfortunately I saw her review after purchase. I had hopes of following the forms and building my confidence, it is a total miss. I read the response to MellowDee saying it's a game, blah, blah, blah. Then you should have named it differently. Guided Tai Chi is very misleading and so was the excerpt showing the interaction. Maybe you should name it "Faux Tai Chi" I will give you a thumbs up for the environment, it is beautiful and calming.

Beautiful App

I’m glad I ignored the reviews and bought this app especially while it’s on sale! It’s obvious the developers put a lot of effort into this one. There’s a learning curve which only makes sense but so worth it. I’m currently using this app to stretch in the morning and to cool down after workouts. It’d be nice before bed too. I like how the music is more clear when you’re getting it right, I like the environments and the endless amount of sessions to choose from. This company also makes a meditation app which has more options than any other meditation app I’ve seen, that is also part of the holiday sale at a ridiculously low price called “Guided Meditation”. Both of these apps are already at a fair price…so if you’re into mindfulness or just feeling good, it’d be crazy to pass them by.
