Lots of potential, but own goals to fix!

Brief first impressions, Wonderful art style and genuinely great options for mindfulness and meditation. The sound and Spatial Audio in particular is VERY good and provides much of the feeling you might get from ASMR in terms of relaxation and chills. However, lacking any sort of accessibility and controls feels like basic XR stuff now. No smooth locomotion, no smooth turning? No ability to turn off vignettes during the teleport locomotion? Beyond that optimisation for Quest 3 is lacking. It shimmers like a Q2 game and the frame rate is all over the place. Any actions, even with UI I encountered stutters, and the General frame rate at times feels like 36fps using ASW to achieve 72fps. This has so much potential, please developers, tell me you’re working on fixing or at least improving these issues. Currently they provide the antithesis to your goals, it feels restrictive and the frame is uncomfortable bordering nauseating. Easy 4 star otherwise.

Ok, but ample room for improvement

The first impression was overall positive, beautiful graphics, sounds, and haptic feedback in certain moments made a wonderful experience. Though €30 felt a pretty steep price for this app tbh. I got a little confused with figuring out how the app works in the beginning, especially reading multiple tabs and trying to understand different activities and levels. I also got bored pretty quickly by some game activities and guided meditation in VR just didn't do it for me, unfortunately. The environment was beautiful, but I found it distracting rather than grounding, so I wanted to keep my eyes closed, which kinda defeats the purpose of a VR-enhanced experience? In another app on the Oculus store, the VR experience managed to create this perfect balance between relaxation, grounding, and soft focus, which gives an extra dimention to breathing and meditation. Unfortunately, I didn't experience the same here. I haven't figured out how exactly I involve other people. And why would I want to? 🤔 To throw balls at the wall? In the Headspace mobile app, there is a feature where people across the world can connect and meditate at the same time together, I think recreating this type of collective experience in VR could be interesting. Also, moving through space is pretty clunky and annoying at times, especially since the app is geared towards relaxation. I am looking forward to seeing how the app will continue developing and improving.

A Candid Review of HeadSpace XR

I was really excited about this app; it was one of my most anticipated apps for the new year. Despite my reluctance to spend $30, I managed to gather the funds by transferring money between accounts just to get it. My friend mentioned he was getting it too, so I felt compelled to be one of the first to own the latest and most impressive meditation app. Upon entering the virtual world, I found it charming but somewhat gloomy and pixelated. I decided to explore anyway. There seemed to be a lot to do, but some of the mechanics in certain areas felt off. The "Clubhouse," a space meant for hanging out with friends, was more like a dark, gloomy cave where the main activity was throwing paint. In fact, throwing these odd paint blobs, which were difficult to manage, seemed to be the core activity of the entire app. There were some positives, like the box breathing room and a window where you pop hearts, but the meditation rooms were awkward. You had to stay in one spot to listen to the meditations; you couldn't move around, which was just odd. I don't mean to be harsh, but for $30 and coming from a well-known app like HeadSpace, I expected much more. I'm still debating whether to request a refund, but I'm holding out hope that they'll improve the app. That's why I'm giving it a 3 instead of a 1. I've also made a video on YouTube titled "A Candid Review of HeadSpace XR on the Metquest Platform" if you want to see it before buying. No offense intended, but they need a better team behind this. It feels like it was hastily put together rather than being carefully crafted and thought out. * To the developers, feel free to reach out if you're looking for ideas. I'm open to revising my rating once enhancements are implemented.

Gave it a second chance and it’s a win

The first time I used this I was kind of “meh” and then went back a few weeks later and find myself craving it now. I really like this! Devs - please consider unrestricting the shared worlds to just friends and family, you can take voice chat away entirely to make it a safe space. Would be really neat to see others in shared worlds and find unique ways to communicate via coloring or just meditating with another so you don’t feel so alone, no need for voice chat

First Impressions

I've used the Headspace app (on my phone) for a few years. I really like it and was excited to hear that it was coming to VR. Now that I've had a chance to try the VR version, I have mixed feelings about it. Overall it's been a positive experience, but it's different from what I expected. This isn't a bad thing, it's just different. What I expected was content similar to what I used on the phone app. I was expecting guided meditations, short video clips, music- stories for bedtime,.... So, while I feel that the current content is interesting, definitely a different way to approach meditation and mental health, I would like to see some of the content from the phone app here in the VR version. I especially like the long term guided meditation classes. As it stands with the current content, there are times when I feel there's just only so much ball throwing and sling shooting I feel like doing. It becomes tiring instead of relaxing. A little more variety would be appreciated.
